From the UK to Canada via Brazil: Gus Santos’ remarkable 15-year career at K2

As we celebrate his remarkable 15-year journey with the company, we recognize the profound impact of his steadfast dedication.

His unwavering support through the company’s evolution, from its early days in London to its expansion into new markets, reflects a deep-seated belief in K2’s mission and vision.

1. Can you reflect on your journey with K2 over the past 15 years, from your initial days in Brazil to your recent move to Canada?

“It’s been an amazing journey! I actually started at K2 in London UK in 2008 as a network engineer.
In March 2010, I moved over to our CEO, Antonio Gulino’s, team. His mission was to open up the Latin America market. So, in August 2010, we moved to Brazil to open our first office in the region. At that time I moved from IT into sales and recruitment and got a lot of training from K2 and mainly from Antonio, who was my mentor.
Believe it or not, we started work at my granny’s house and moved into a proper office once we established the legal entity and found office space. I have great memories from back then.
In 2012 I moved back to the IT team and moved to San Francisco where I was back on working to support users, managing servers and our new cloud systems. I stayed in the USA for about a year and I moved back to Brazil to keep working with IT, as we were starting up a new IT team.
In 2019, I embraced a new opportunity in business intelligence, leading to the formation of our global data solutions team. A year ago, I moved to London, Canada, with my family. Canada offers a wonderful environment for raising my children, and we’re thoroughly enjoying our life here.”

2. What motivated you to stay with K2 for such a significant period, and how has the company supported your professional growth and development.

“There are a lot of things that I like about K2. Firstly, one of our company core values is ‘open and honest relationships’. That really resonates with me and I love that I can always share my ideas, thoughts, give and receive feedback and talk with anyone in the company, no matter who they are or which role they are in.
I’m a technology driven person and another thing that I really like about K2 is that it’s a company that’s always ahead of the curve! We’re always learning new skills and new technologies.”

3. Could you share some memorable moments or highlights from your time at K2, perhaps a project or achievement that stands out to you?

“One of the things I remember was when I opened up my first client in Brazil. I was trying to start a relationship with a multinational manufacturer of confectionery and pet food in Brazil for months. The business was a big client we were already working with in EMEA.
After a lot of work, I finally managed to reach the right person and managed to get a face-to-face meeting with them. Of course at this point my manager went with me and we did the meeting together. They gave us our first role and I found a consultant that was the right fit within 48 hours. We managed to get more roles and we created a great partnership with the client.”

4. How do you believe your role has evolved over the years, and what key skills or experiences have you gained along the way?

“I’ve certainly grown a lot as a professional. I’ve evolved from a network engineer with a focus on Microsoft infrastructure to a BI/data specialist.
This journey has enriched me with people management skills, a deep dive into new technologies, and a seamless transition between IT and business domains. I find immense satisfaction in my work, drawing on my comprehensive understanding of K2’s business to leverage my technical expertise. This unique perspective enables me to devise innovative solutions and support the business to the fullest extent of my capabilities.”

5. What advice would you give to newer employees or those considering a long-term commitment to K2 based on your own experiences?

“I would tell them to do their best, work with transparency, maintain open and honest relationships, embrace change and accept new challenges. If you commit to your work and have an open mind and you’re willing to learn, the sky’s the limit with this company.”

6. As someone who has witnessed the company’s growth and evolution firsthand, how do you envision the future of K2?

“With our rich history of adapting to technological advancements and market shifts, I see us expanding our services to embrace emerging technologies, further enriching our consulting and recruitment capabilities. By leveraging our deep understanding of technology trends and market demands, we’re poised to innovate and adapt, and ensure we remain at the forefront of providing cutting-edge solutions.
